Living with a disability presents unique challenges, but it need not be a heavy burden to bear. Drawing from my personal journey, I've come to realize that the pivotal factor in leading a gratifying life, whether with or without a disability, is a shift in perspective. It isn't about fixating on one's limitations but rather celebrating one's capabilities. By redirecting our focus and perspective towards what we can achieve, a transformative journey begins.

For an extended period, I found myself immersed in thoughts of what I couldn't do. My disability, I thought, was a confining force, and this negative outlook hindered my progress in many facets of life. It eroded my self-assurance, left me feeling adrift, exposed me to society's biases against wheelchair users, and subjected me to the stereotypes associated with being different from the perceived "norm" on the street.

It was only when I consciously shifted my perspective that I started to live in the present moment. I began to appreciate the feats I could accomplish, the profound self-discoveries – both favourable and otherwise – and the resourcefulness I developed in surmounting a myriad of challenges. Inside myself, I uncovered a wellspring of resilience and determination to persevere, constructing a life in which I could truly flourish. I revealed in those small victories, which might seem trivial to some but held profound significance for me.

"Celebrate your victories, regardless of how modest they may seem to others."

Crucially, my journey taught me the value of setting realistic expectations. It's all too easy to become entangled in the notion of what our lives should resemble, instead of focusing on their genuine essence. In reality, each person's journey is as unique as they are. By grounding myself in attainable goals, I honed in on what truly mattered, finding joy in my accomplishments, irrespective of their scale.

Moreover, I finally grasped the vital importance of making time for self-care. Living with a neuromuscular condition is both physically and emotionally taxing. Nevertheless, prioritizing self-care, whether through exercise, meditation, or quality time with loved ones, became an integral part of my daily routine, sustaining my positivity and concentration in the face of both physical and emotional demands.

Lastly, I learned to embrace my disability as an intrinsic aspect of my identity. It needn't be a source of shame, concealed from the world. For far too long, I pretended to be just another "normal" and "healthy" individual, a charade that often led to suffering and excruciating efforts to maintain.

By wholeheartedly accepting my disability, I discovered a community of kindred spirits who had navigated similar paths. This sense of belonging diminished my isolation and provided the support required for personal growth and flourishing.

In conclusion, living with a disability may entail challenges, but with the right perspective, realistic expectations, diligent self-care, and a full embrace of our true selves – both strengths and vulnerabilities – we can uncover joy and fulfilment in the tapestry of our distinctive lives. Perspective, undoubtedly, is the key on this transformative journey I find myself on.
